From all the leaders we would like to wish everyone a very merry and peaceful christmas and a joyful New Year.
On Thursday the scouts had their annual Christmas dinner at the hall. There were a total of 31 people who attended including the scouts, leaders, cubs joining after the holidays and invited guests. We started the night by investing one of our new boys to the troop. Once we had all had our dinner we had the various different speeches and onwards to the presentation of awards. There were 3 boys who gained their Chief Scout Gold Award after completing all of the requirements, well done to you guys and I wish you a happy scouting future and thanks for all of your commitment and time that you have given to our group. There also received their moving on badge as they will be joining the explorer scouts after Christmas. The badges were also given out to the new patrol leaders and assistant patrol leaders. A presentation was made to the patrol who won this year’s district competition and prizes were then given to the kids who helped sell poppies last month. We then had the presentation of the Addie Bigger Shield to the winning patrol, well done to the patrol leader and his patrol for winning the shield. The 2nd year in a row and Cobra patrol winning the shield the last 4 years. We ended the evening with a slide show of photographs from the scouting camps and events throughout the year before the kids left once receiving there Christmas presents. A great night! To all who attended leave your comments from the Christmas dinner on the message board.
Our race night took place on Saturday 3rd December and was a huge success. There was a great turnout and thanks to everyone who came along to make the night so great. We raise a total of £1517.50 after expences. This money goes toward the upkeeping of the hall for another year. Thanks again for alll your support.
Thank You to everyone who participated in the Christmas Quiz. There were lots of correct sheets handed back, 57 to be exact. One winner was drawn at our race night. Congratulations to M.Reilly. You won £25 and will be contacted by one of the leaders shortly. From the quiz we raised £145.
The scouts were given the chance to write the report for the weekend. They did this on Thursday in their patrols.

Our trip to the bothy was amazing. The bus was relaxing and fun, we sang, we ate, we joked, we had a laugh. It was a good while before we got there. Some of us had been to the bothy before so we knew what was coming, but the younger scouts seemed horrified and gob smacked when they heard we had to hike hill for over an hour. After our photo was taken at the beginning of the journey we set off. Our rucksacks were even heavier with all the extra food we had to carry. We were barely half way our journey when we already saw amazing sceneries of hills, woods, clear sky and sheep running mad. The paths were icy, which made the walk more difficult but fun. Some even took ice for refreshments since we were getting exhausted. We soon came across a small stream, most of us filled our empty bottles with it, it was so pure, so fresh and we drank non stop. The journey soon became more difficult as we had to cross an icy narrow path. Our bags were heavy, we were tired and we could barely keep our balance crossing this path, there was a steep hill below us which made us nervous.
At last we reached our destination, the bothy was on a hill, and further down was a massive field of overgrown grass, bogs and hidden ditches. The bothy was a cosy place, it has a sitting room, kitchen, toilet and all of the upstairs was our bedroom, and there were no pillows or covers just a big wooden block for us to sleep on. Soon we were aloud to do whatever we wanted, a group of us went to the woods, it was pitch black, and the hills were so steep you could use the trees top climb. Night came and we had a war, camouflaged and skilled, we fought (not really) we had supper in front of our warm fire as there was no electricity. We slept well in our sleeping bags that night and we soon headed back to the bus. The driver gave us drinks and sweets. We sang on the way home as we left the beautiful countryside.

All 3 sections celebrated their halloween party this week. The beavers and cubs had a joint party on Tuesday night and the scouts had theirs on Thursday. Both night were great fun and all of the kids looked great with lots of time and effort going into the costumes. The kids played many games and had great fun. There was the pea and straw game, the cocolate game, pumpkin race, jelly race, ducking for apples and the most fun of all was trying to smash the paniata!! Well done everyone, two great fun nights! The photos of the party can be foung in the members area!

Well 31 children set off on the Friday evening with a few worried looks on some faces (that was the parents). This was the first weekend away for 5 of the cubs. We eventually arrived at the Scout hall in Adrossan via a few detours. Well ok we got lost!! We were able to put our good scouting skills to use to find the place – ask a local.
It was the usual first night of settling in. We had a quiz with a few winners and then a lovely supper. The leaders then thought it was time for the boys to go to bed but they had other ideas! So yes it was a late night.
Saturday morning was an early rise. Washed and dressed (well dressed) breakfast and to the train station for 9.30am. I’ve usually got trouble organizing one boy in the morning, so getting 31 out the door for that time was pretty good going. From the train was the ferry from the ferry was the bus and from the bus was the bikes. So many modes of transport in the one day!
So off we set on our bikes, all 37 of us in a row. You will all be pleased to know that there were no accidents as all were very responsible while cycling on the road. Fortunately the road was quiet. We stopped for a well earned rest and had lunch. One boy asking if he could now hand in his bike as he had had enough. I didn’t like to tell him he wasn’t even half way round the island. But I could completely sympathize with him. We eventually ALL made it round the island 10 ¾ miles of it. In fact some of us are still suffering the after effects!!
Once we had handed back our bikes the toy shop/joke shop did a roaring trade. We then took a walk down to the Crocodile Rock where one of the boys (C.B.) made his promise and was welcomed into the 2nd Coatbridge Cub Scout group. Well done. It was the back on the bus then on the ferry then on the train and safely back to our digs.
Saturday night went in very quickly and we had the usual campfire songs led by our wonderful scout leader. The boys favorite song seems to be The Muffin Man. I think they just like to see the scout leader dancing about and looking silly!! Well it was soon bed time as the leaders were absolutely shattered. The boys didn’t appear to argue with us and we thought we had won a watch!! But we soon found out why! The hall they were all sleeping in was transformed into The Blackpool Illuminations!! Each boy had several glow sticks and they were all dancing about. Where on earth do they get all their energy from?
Sunday morning we had a fantastic cooked breakfast – thanks to the cook!! It was then time for our Scouts Own where we gave thanks to God for all the good things he has provided for us. There was some good singing too. We then went for a lovely walk down to the beach; although it was windy the sun was out. On return from our walk we had a visit from the Area Commissioner for Ayrshire Scout who stayed and had lunch with us. It was then a quick tidy up and the bus was back to take us home.
It was a fantastic weekend and a big thanks to all the leaders who put so much hard working into making it a success. Also I would like to thank Adrossan Scout group for the use of their hall for the weekend it was a great venue and we hope to use it again in the future.

I have to start by congratulating the 2nd Coatbridge leaders, parents and
kids. At the recent district AGM our group was presented with the Baird
Watson trophy. This is a trophy which is given to a group for all of the
sections within a group working together. The reason for 2nd Coatbridge
winning it was that after losing our beaver leader all of the other leaders
worked together to keep the beavers up and running which even involved
moving them to a Tuesday night. This was only the 2nd time that our
group have won the trophy, the first being in 1984, 21 years ago. Well
done to everyone!!! Our group is one of the most successful in the
district with the beaver colony holding 27 members; the cub scouts have
21 kids and the scout section have 22 boys. Keep up the great work guys!!!

Well done to 6 scouts from the 2nd Coatbridge who went to this years district competition and came back as winners bringing back the Addie Biggar trophy.
Throughout the weekend the 6 scouts were working in their patrol as part of a team, on their own, looking after their own site and cooking their own meals. The boys went around different bases, doing different scouting activities like first aid, knotting, axe and saw, map and compass and much more.
All of this was done of their own merit. Although there were scout leaders at the event, the boys did all of the work on there own. Well done guys and keep up the good work!!!
